Subject: Allan Robinson Special Issue - Submission deadline extended
Date: Tue, 31 Aug 2010 16:00:38 -0700
From: Andrew M Moore

Dear Author,

A number of you have indicated that you need more time to complete your manuscripts for the special issue of Dynamics of Atmospheres and Oceans honoring Allan Robinson.

Therefore, we have decided to extend the submission deadline to 15 October, 2010.

All manuscripts must be submitted electronically via the journal online submission system http://ees.elsevier.com/dynat/default.asp. When submitting your paper, please be sure to select "Special Issue: In Honor of A.R. Robinson" as the article type. We look forward to receiving your submissions.

In the meantime, it would also be very helpful if you could send us now the working title of your paper and the author list. This will greatly facilitate the review process as manuscripts begin to arrive.

Also, very many thanks to those of you who have submitted your manuscripts already. Processing of these manuscripts has begun, and rest assured you will not be disadvantaged by the extended submission deadline.

special issue in honour of Prof. Allan Robinson PDF Print
Tuesday, 06 July 2010

Dear Colleagues,

Dynamics of Atmospheres and Oceans calls for contributions to a special issue in honour
of Prof. Allan Robinson, devoted to the basic fields of investigations in marine sciences:

1) Theoretical research on physical and interdisciplinary ocean dynamics and simulations;

2) Fundamental ocean modeling and simulations including data assimilation, design of data collection experiments, adaptive sampling and real-time predictions;

3) Applied research relating to efficient multiuse and management of coastal zones, fisheries science, rapid environmental assessment and naval and maritime operations.

You can find more information on:

http://www.elsevier.com/wps/find/journaldescription.cws_home/503327/description

When submitting your manuscripts, please select "Allan Robinson Special Issue" as the article type.
Deadlines: August 2010 for submissions, Spring 2011 anticipated print of volume.

I hope you can join us in this special gift to one of the funding fathers of modern ocean
sciences,

best regards
Nadia

Security applications of environmental modelling PDF Print
Wednesday, 26 May 2010

The 2nd Waterside Security Conference will be held in ITALY November 3-5 2010.  Abstracts are due by Monday May 31.  We are organizing sessions under the topic "Security applications of environmental modelling" with a planned session on "Operational  oceanography & security".  Please see the conference website for more details and to submit an abstract:
http://www.wss2010.org/abstracts.html

The overall goal of this conference is to bring together experts from a variety of disciplines and backgrounds who have a common interest in preventing terrorist attacks and criminal activity in ports, harbours, coastal waters, and inland waters around the world. Specifically, the conference goals are twofold:

1. While taking into account the realities of security providers, government policy, and business, *advance new maritime technologies * in:
   * Port protection
   * Counter-piracy
   * Counter-terrorism
   * Protection of critical infrastructure
   * Protection of high-profile events
   * Small boat monitoring and stopping
   * Protection of ships and energy platforms
   * Prevention of underwater intruders
   * Maritime interdiction, maritime surveillance, and information sharing

2. *Stimulate multi-disciplinary thinking* on topics such as:

   * Quantitative threat analyses
   * Communication of risk
   * Cost-benefit analyses
   * Quality and effectiveness metrics
   * Best practices
   * Table-top exercises
   * Integrated systems and their evaluation
   * Policy
   * Recommended way ahead

8th Intern. Conf. of Num. Analysis and Applied Math. (ICNAAM 2010) PDF Print
Tuesday, 18 May 2010

Dear colleagues,

We would like to bring your attention to the following session on data assimilation and inverse problems in Geosciences that will be held in Rhodes, Greece on 19-25 Sept 2010 as part of the 8th International Conference of Numerical Analysis and Applied Mathematics (ICNAAM 2010). This session will be devoted to all theoratical and practical aspects of data assimilation and inverse problems with emphasis to applications on large dimensional nonlinear problems in geosciences.
General information about ICNAAM can be found at the conference webpage
http://www.icnaam.org/

Best regards,
George Triantafyllou & Ibrahim Hoteit

Title: "Data Assimilation and Inverse Problems in Geosciences"

Organizers: Dr. Ibrahim Hoteit, King Abdullah University of Science and Technology- KAUST, Thuwal, Saudi Arabia and Dr.George Triantafyllou, Hellenic Center of Marine Research - HCMR, Anavissos, Greece

Description of the topic of the session:
Data assimilation and inverse methods combine numerical models and observations to make the best possible estimates of the state and/or the parameters of a dynamical system. With the development of complex numerical models in almost every area of geosciences, these methods are increasingly becoming a necessary component to achieve more accurate predictions and reanalysis. The high complexity, nonlinearity and large dimension make the application of data assimilation and inverse methods to geophysical systems a quite challenging effort.
The aim of this mini-symposium is to gather and discuss recent theoretical and practical progress relevant to data assimilation and inverse problems in all areas of geosciences. This includes applications in atmosphere, ocean, climate, solid earth geophysics, hydrology, and petroleum engineering, etc. Contributions discussing new developments of operational
systems are also of interest. Special emphasis will be put on methods and new developments of mathematical aspects of data assimilation and inverse problems. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

- Data assimilation methods, e.g. 4DVAR, Kalman filtering and smoothing, nonlinear Bayesian filtering - Statistical and deterministic approaches to inverse problems
- Inverse problems with very high dimensional parameter space
- Monte Carlo methods and Bayesian computation
